Soul Train

The Soul Closet concludes the week with a dose of Soul Train from 1974. My favorite part: The couple at :48.

Love, Peace and Soul.

Michelle and Barack will throw down like this at the inaugural balls!

This BEAUTIFUL movement stimulates my concern about assimilation. What can be lost may be more valuable than what will be gained. I hope we never lose the abilities to move so creatively to those African rhythms!

African derived art such as 1970's dance should be treated like ballet and other classical forms, preserved in written and visual archives and kept alive through performance.

Joyce, I was thinking the same thing. I sent this video to my sister, who got me hooked on Soul Train when we were kids, and I said "We (as a people) don't get down like this anymore." I am going to post another one, if I can find it again, of a Soul Train dance contest from early in its syndication run. The movements are simply beautiful. Watch out for it.

Lee, I love the Soul Closet! The clothing ads remind me when Smokey Joe's ruled State Street! (You're hearing from a woman whose 82-year-old mother from Ireland uses an Afro pick with the Black Power fist on it. I told mom I have some friends who would like to get their hands on it, but she won't part with it. She purchased it at High-Low Foods at Laramie and Jackson circa 1969.)
Thre things: I am going to forward you a new song and video, "There's no one as Irish as Barack Obama." Everyone wants to claim him!
And if you want to hear some good blue-eyed soul that sounds like Sly Stone's "If You Want Me to Stay," check out Nikka Costa's "Everybody's Got Their Somethin."
I had the honor of seeing Rufus and Chaka Khan at one of my high school sock hops. She was--is--something.
Take care,
Maureen O'Donnell

Maureen! Always good to hear from you. And I am glad your mother is still on the case.
